GRADE 1

Since I last wrote an instalment for the newsletter, the Grade 1’s have participated in Red Day, PJ’s Day and Responsible Pet Ownership.

English

Our Writing genre, Explanation, has been a hard task because we have been learning so many new and different skills. Families are asked to talk about what an Explanation is to their child and guide them through writing one.

Mathematics

In Maths, the class has been enjoying the hands- on- activities by measuring different objects around the school with their hands, feet and paperclips. They’ve been exploring shapes and time, by discussing different activities that they do on the weekend with their families.

Integrated Studies

As part of our Integrated Studies, we have been learning how to keep ourselves clean so we can be protected from germs. This week we have been discussing how we use our teeth and keep them clean.

ICT

It is imperative that Grade 1’s know how to logon to the computer. If they don’t have this skill, it slows them down and they aren’t able to complete set work. Parents please spend some time in assisting your child to find the keys on the key board in order to speed up this process for them. Families could also continue to assist in finding these keys; Clrt, Alt and Delete, the letters s, g, r, a, d, & e and the numbers 1& 2. Children are encouraged to practise logging into their Reading Eggs and Mathletics as well.

You could also encourage your child to open new documents and save them. The next step is that they will return to those saved documents at a later date, to open, edit and save new data.

Yes! This is a repeat.

Assessment points for this term are;

Reading Folders

Thanks to the families who send their reading folders in every Wednesday to change them. Remember to sign and date every time your listen to your child’s reading.

Communication Folders

These need to come to school every day so that I can put or write notes in them. Once you have read the notes please sign or initial to show that you have seen them. They are also there for you to write notes to your child’s class teacher, if you have any issues or concerns.
